ADVERBS

Introducing more concepts of Spanish grammar.

Unless you are a language teacher or have studied language grammar recently, there’s a good chance you may not know what an adverb is. At the start, I certainly didn’t! So let's recap.

According to Wikipedia, an adverb is described as follows:

“An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, adjective, another adverb, determiner, noun phrase, clause, preposition, or sentence. Adverbs typically express manner, place, time, frequency, degree, level of certainty, etc., answering questions such as how?, in what way?, when?, where?, and to what extent?”

This is far from a straightforward and easy to understand definition. So let’s see some examples of adverbs answering 4 different types of question:

How? When? Where? How often?
quickly before here daily
slowly after there always
greatly soon far never
beautifully later near once
excitedly today above sometimes
openly now below rarely
well tomorrow out usually

Notice how many of the adverbs shown end with –ly.

They are constructed by taking an adjective and adding a –ly suffix. Thus: quick becomes quickly, sad becomes sadly, great becomes greatly and so on…

In Spanish we can construct adverbs in a similar way. But instead of adding a –ly suffix to an adjective, we add a –mente suffix.

Unlike Spanish adjectives, Spanish adverbs DO NOT observe gender and plurality agreement. Therefore, to construct a Spanish adverb, you add a –mente suffix to the singular feminine form of an adjective. The following table gives some examples:

Adjective  Adjective  Adverb Meaning
rápido rápida rápidamente quickly
lento lenta lentamente slowly
básico básica básicamente basically
tranquilo tranquila tranquilamente calmly
fácil fácil fácilmente easily
común común comúnmente commonly

Remember: Spanish adverbs DO NOT observe gender and plurality agreement, so adverbs that end in –mente, are always constructed from the singular feminine adjective form. So quickly is "rápidamente" and never "rápidomente"

For other adverbs that don’t end in –mente, we must learn them as pieces of vocabulary. The following table gives some examples.

Notice that these adverbs are not constructed from single modified adjectives, but from other words or collections of words to create adverbial phrases.

Spanish Meaning
a veces sometimes
a diario daily
a tiempo on time
de noche at night
al final in the end
por fin finally
a la vez at the same time
con frecuencia frequently
con alegría happily
ya already
casi almost
ahora now
ahora mismo right now
después after
también also
allí there
aquí here
mejor better
peor worse
siempre always
nunca never
todavía still
más more
menos less
pronto soon
poco a little
muy very
bastante quite
demasiado too much
así like this
de nuevo once again
por suerte luckily
bien well
mal badly, incorrectly
en serio seriously
encima on top
abajo below
lejos far
cerca near
adentro inside
afuera outside

Conclusion | En conclusión
Adverbs are one the most difficult categories of word to describe, as they can seem to be a “catch-all” for everything that the more defined grammatical categories are not.

This said, knowing some basic rules about adverbs, particularly how to form them based on adjectives, is extremely helpful when starting out. Without much effort, one can start to expand one’s vocabulary from adjectives into adverbs, simply by knowing how to append a suffix.

Beyond this, learning as many of the non-adjective based adverbs and adverbial phrases as possible is recommended. Certainly, Spanish adverbs appear in conversation with a surprisingly high frequency.
